Thomas "Tomm" Moore (born January 7, 1977) is an amazing Irish filmmaker, animator, and artist. He helps create animated movies and shows. Tomm is one of the people who started Cartoon Saloon, a famous animation studio in Kilkenny, Ireland. He started it with his friends Nora Twomey and Paul Young.

Tomm Moore is known for his beautiful animated films. Three of his movies, The Secret of Kells (2009), Song of the Sea (2014), and Wolfwalkers (2020), were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. These films are loved by many people around the world!

Early Life and Film Passion

Tomm Moore was born in Newry, Northern Ireland. He is the oldest of four children. When he was young, his family moved to Kilkenny in the Republic of Ireland. His dad worked there as an engineer.

As a teenager, Tomm joined the Young Irish Film Makers in Kilkenny. This is where he learned a lot about movies and animation. It helped him discover his passion for filmmaking. After finishing secondary school, he studied classical animation in Dublin.

Creating Animated Worlds

While still in college in 1999, Tomm Moore helped start the Cartoon Saloon animation studio. He created it with Paul Young and Nora Twomey. They first set up their studio in the same place as the Young Irish Film Makers. But soon, their studio grew too big for that space! Cartoon Saloon has made many cool projects, including the TV series Skunk Fu!.

The Secret of Kells

Tomm's first animated movie was The Secret of Kells (2009). He directed it with Nora Twomey. The film is a hand-drawn animation set in Ireland a long, long time ago, in the 800s. It is inspired by old Irish history and legends.

The Secret of Kells first showed at a film festival in Berlin in 2009. It was later released in cinemas in Ireland and other countries. In 2010, this amazing film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film.

Song of the Sea

In 2014, Tomm Moore finished his second movie, Song of the Sea. Like The Secret of Kells, this film uses traditional animation. It is also based on Irish folklore, especially stories about selkies. Selkies are magical creatures that can change from seals into humans!

Song of the Sea was a huge success and received great reviews. It was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

The Prophet and Wolfwalkers

Also in 2014, Tomm Moore helped direct a part of the movie Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet. This film had different directors for each section.

Tomm's third main movie, Wolfwalkers, came out in 2020 on Apple TV+. He directed it with Ross Stewart. Wolfwalkers is the last film in what Tomm calls his "Irish Folklore trilogy." The other two films in this special group are Song of the Sea and The Secret of Kells.

Comics and Graphic Novels

Besides films, Tomm Moore has also drawn two Irish language graphic novels. These books tell the story of St. Patrick. He also created a two-part graphic novel version of The Secret of Kells.

Personal Life

Tomm Moore is the nephew of singer/songwriter Kieran Goss. He has been with his wife, Liselott Olofsson, since the 1990s. Liselott is an artist who works with ceramics. They have a son named Ben, who is the inspiration for the main character in the movie Song of the Sea. Tomm has been a vegetarian since he was a child and is now vegan.
