Early Life and Learning
Tomm Moore was born in Newry, Northern Ireland. When he was young, his family moved to Kilkenny in the Republic of Ireland. His dad worked there as an engineer.
Discovering Animation
When Tomm was a teenager, he joined a group called Young Irish Film Makers in Kilkenny. This is where he learned a lot about movies and animation and really fell in love with it. After finishing secondary school, he went to Ballyfermot College of Further Education in Dublin to study classical animation.
Making Movies and Art
In 1999, during his last year at college, Tomm Moore, along with Paul Young and Nora Twomey, started their own animation studio called Cartoon Saloon. They first set up their studio in the same place as the Young Irish Film Makers, but they quickly grew too big for that space. Their studio even created a TV show called Skunk Fu!.
The Secret of Kells
Tomm's first animated movie, The Secret of Kells, came out in 2009. He directed it with Nora Twomey. This movie was made using traditional hand-drawn animation. It tells a story set in Ireland a long, long time ago, in the 9th century, and is inspired by old Irish history and legends.
The movie first showed at a film festival in Berlin in February 2009. It was later released in many countries. In February 2010, The Secret of Kells was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film!
Song of the Sea
In 2014, Tomm finished his second movie, Song of the Sea. Just like The Secret of Kells, this movie was also traditionally animated. It's based on Irish folklore, especially stories about selkies, who are magical creatures that can change from seals into humans. This film was also a huge hit and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
The Prophet and Wolfwalkers
Also in 2014, Tomm Moore helped direct a part of a movie called The Prophet. This movie was based on a famous book by Kahlil Gibran. Different directors worked on different parts of the film.
Tomm's third movie that he directed, Wolfwalkers, came out in 2020 on Apple TV+. He directed this one with Ross Stewart. Wolfwalkers is the last movie in what Tomm calls his "Irish Folklore trilogy." This trilogy includes Wolfwalkers, Song of the Sea, and The Secret of Kells.
Comics and Graphic Novels
Besides movies, Tomm Moore has also drawn two graphic novels in the Irish language. These books, called An Sclábhaí (which means "the slave") and An Teachtaire (meaning "the messenger"), tell the story of St. Patrick. He also created a two-part graphic novel version of The Secret of Kells.
Personal Life
Tomm Moore is married to Liselott Olofsson, who is an artist working with ceramics. They have a son named Ben. Tomm has been a vegetarian since he was a child and is now vegan.
