Thomas Roger Carroll (born August 18, 1942 – died August 16, 2020) was a talented Irish footballer. He played as a defender. Tommy Carroll was known for his strong play on the field.

Tommy Carroll's Early Career
Tommy Carroll was born in Dublin, Ireland. He started playing football at a young age. When he was just 15, he made his first appearance for Shelbourne. His older brother, Eddie, also played on the team.
During his seven years at Shelbourne, Tommy achieved great success. He helped the team win the League of Ireland Championship. He also won the FAI Cup with Shelbourne. These were big achievements early in his career.
Playing in England
In August 1964, Tommy moved to England. He joined a club called Cambridge City. While playing there, he made history. In 1966, he played in the very first game for the Republic of Ireland U23 squad.
Later in July 1966, Tommy moved to Ipswich Town. He played as a right full-back for six seasons. During his time at Ipswich, the team won the Second Division title. This was under the management of Bill McGarry. After some time, he moved to Birmingham City in November 1971.
International Matches for Ireland
Tommy Carroll was proud to represent his country. He played for the Republic of Ireland 17 times. In these games, he scored one goal for his nation. He also played three times for Ireland's amateur team.
Becoming a Manager
After his playing career, Tommy Carroll became a football manager. He managed Shelbourne FC for most of the 1975/76 season. Later, in December 1976, he became the player/manager for Athlone Town. This meant he played for the team while also managing them.
Tommy Carroll passed away on August 16, 2020, at the age of 77.
