Tomohiro Katanosaka (片野坂 知宏, Katanosaka Tomohiro, born 18 April 1971) is a Japanese professional football manager and former player. He is currently the manager of J2 League club Oita Trinita.
Playing as a Footballer
Tomohiro Katanosaka was born in Kagoshima, Japan, on April 18, 1971. After finishing high school, he started his professional football career in 1990. He joined a team called Mazda, which later became known as Sanfrecce Hiroshima.
Early Career at Sanfrecce Hiroshima
From 1991, Katanosaka became a regular player for Sanfrecce Hiroshima. He played as a left side back, helping his team defend and attack. In 1994, his team did very well, finishing in second place in the J1 League. This was a great achievement for the club.
Moving to Kashiwa Reysol
In July 1995, Katanosaka moved to Kashiwa Reysol. He quickly became a key player for his new team. With Kashiwa Reysol, he helped them win the 1999 J.League Cup in 1999. This was a major trophy for the club and a highlight of his playing career.
Later Years and Retirement
After his time at Kashiwa Reysol, Katanosaka joined Oita Trinita in 2000. He also played on loan for other teams like Gamba Osaka and Vegalta Sendai. He returned to Oita Trinita in 2003 and decided to retire from playing football at the end of that season.
Becoming a Football Manager
After he stopped playing, Tomohiro Katanosaka began a new journey as a football coach. He started his coaching career at Oita Trinita in 2004, the same club where he ended his playing days.
Coaching Success at Gamba Osaka and Sanfrecce Hiroshima
In 2007, he moved to Gamba Osaka to work as a coach. During his time there, the club won several important trophies. They won the 2007 J.League Cup and the Emperor's Cup in both 2008 and 2009.
Katanosaka then moved to his first club, Sanfrecce Hiroshima, in 2010, again as a coach. He helped them win the J1 League championship twice, in 2012 and 2013. He returned to Gamba Osaka in 2014, where the team had an amazing year. They won all three major Japanese titles: the J1 League, the J.League Cup, and the Emperor's Cup. They also won the Emperor's Cup again in 2015.
Leading Oita Trinita to Promotion
In 2016, Tomohiro Katanosaka became the manager of Oita Trinita. At that time, the team was in the J3 League, which is a lower division. He led them to win the J3 League championship in 2016, which meant they were promoted to the J2 League.
His success continued, and in the 2018 season, Oita Trinita finished second in the J2 League. This earned them another promotion, this time to the top division, the J1 League. He has shown great skill in leading teams to success.
