About Toney Freeman, The X-Man
Toney Freeman was known as "The X-Man." This nickname came from his body shape. It looked like a big "X." This means he had wide shoulders, a small waist, and strong, flaring thighs. This shape is a classic look in bodybuilding.
Toney's pictures were in many popular fitness magazines. These included Flex, Muscular Development, and Musclemag. He did not start competing professionally until he was almost 40 years old. For many years, bodybuilding was just a hobby for him. Also, famous bodybuilders like Lee Haney and Dorian Yates were very popular during that time.
Toney's Journey to Professional Bodybuilding
It took Toney many years to build up his large body frame. He had a mentor named Dave Palumbo who helped him become a professional bodybuilder.
Toney's first competition was in 1993. It was called the National Physique Committee (NPC) Junior Nationals. He won the heavyweight class there. His first big professional event was the Night of Champions competition. He placed 11th in that show.
He competed in the Arnold Classic for the first time in 2005. He placed 10th. In 2006, he was 7th at the Ironman Pro Invitational. His first time at the Mr. Olympia competition was also in 2006, where he placed 7th.
Major Wins and Achievements
Toney had a very successful year in 2007. He won both the Ironman Pro and the Sacramento Pro competitions. He also placed 3rd at the Arnold Classic that year. In 2008, he reached the top 5 at the Mr. Olympia contest.
An Incident in Sweden
In December 2010, Toney Freeman visited Sweden for a fitness festival. While he was at a store, police officers approached him. They knew he and other bodybuilders were in Sweden from posters.
According to Toney, the police took him to the station. He said he was not allowed to have a lawyer. He also said he was made to give a sample. He was released later that day without any charges.
Toney Freeman was the first international bodybuilder to be stopped by Swedish police in this way. This method is called "muscle profiling." It means police suspect someone of using certain substances just because of their muscular appearance. In Sweden, it is against the law to have some of these substances. Police would use a bodybuilder's size to stop them. Then, they would try to prove their case with samples taken at the station.
A police staff member said that if you are a professional bodybuilder, you should be careful when visiting Sundsvall, Sweden. He explained that they were very informed about these things.
