Tony Capaldi's Club Career
Capaldi started his football journey at Birmingham City. He trained there as a young player. While at Birmingham, he spent some time playing on loan for Hereford United. A loan means a player temporarily plays for another team.
He joined Plymouth Argyle in 2003. He had not played any first-team games for Birmingham City before this move. In the 2004–05 season, Tony broke his leg during a game. He was out for a long time. But in December 2004, he signed a new contract with Plymouth until June 2007.
Playing for Cardiff City
Capaldi decided not to sign a new contract with Plymouth. On 25 May 2007, he joined Cardiff City. He signed a three-year contract. He moved for free because his contract with Plymouth had ended. This is called a Bosman free transfer.
He started as the main left back for Cardiff. But he found it hard to play consistently well. He was sometimes replaced by Chris Gunter. After Gunter was sold, Capaldi returned to the team. He started to play better. He even played in all six of Cardiff's games when they reached the 2008 FA Cup Final.
At the start of the 2008–09 season, Capaldi had a knee problem. He missed the first two weeks of the season. He returned on 26 August in a League Cup game. But his knee problem came back. He was out for over three months. He finally returned as a substitute in an FA Cup game against Arsenal on 25 January. He only played five games for Cardiff that season.
On 18 August 2009, Capaldi was sent off in a game against his old club, Plymouth Argyle. Cardiff won the game 3–1. Capaldi later played in a game against Swansea City. He played as a left midfielder. However, he wasn't playing very often. He said he might need to find another club to play more.
Loan to Leeds United
On 26 November 2009, Capaldi joined League One leaders Leeds United. This was a loan deal until 4 January 2010. He hoped to join them permanently. He was allowed to play for Leeds in the FA Cup.
He made his first appearance for Leeds in an FA Cup game against Kettering Town. He then played his first league game against Oldham Athletic. After playing another game, Capaldi said he really wanted to stay at Leeds.
He was not in the starting team for the replay against Kettering. But he came on as a substitute when another player got injured. He started the next game, which was a 0–0 draw. However, he was then dropped from the team for four games. He was an unused substitute in his last loan game. This was a 1–0 win over Manchester United in the FA Cup.
Back to Cardiff City
Capaldi went back to Cardiff on 5 January 2010. Leeds decided not to keep him. He played nine more games for Cardiff. He was released by the club at the end of the season.
Later Years in Football
After leaving Cardiff, Capaldi tried out for a few clubs. These included Plymouth Argyle and Crystal Palace. On 16 September 2010, he signed a short-term deal with Morecambe. Here, he played for his former Northern Ireland manager, Sammy McIlroy.
In June 2011, Capaldi joined Oxford United. He signed a two-year contract. He was injured for most of the 2011–12 season. He finally played his first game for Oxford on the last day of the season. Oxford released him when his contract ended in 2013. He had played 39 games for them. He then joined Tamworth in August 2013.
International Career
Tony Capaldi was born in Norway. His father was Scottish, and he grew up in Birmingham, England. But he chose to play for Northern Ireland. He could do this because his grandmother was born in Limavady, Northern Ireland.
Capaldi played 22 times for the Northern Ireland senior team. His first game was in March 2004. It was a 1–0 win against Estonia. He also played in their famous 1–0 win over England in September 2005. Capaldi broke a record for Plymouth Argyle players. He became the player with the most international appearances from the club.
