Tony Currie, born on December 25, 1962, is a famous Australian former professional rugby league player. He played during the 1980s and 1990s. Tony is of Aboriginal descent. He proudly represented Australia as part of the Kangaroos team. He also played for Queensland in the exciting State of Origin series. At the club level, Tony played for big teams like the Brisbane Broncos and the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in Australia. He even helped both these teams win championships! He also played for Leeds in England.

Tony Currie's Playing Career

Early Success in Brisbane

In 1982, Tony Currie played for the Western Suburbs team. While playing there, he won a special award called the Rothmans Medal. This award was for the best player in the Brisbane Rugby League premiership.

Playing for Australia

Tony Currie also played for the Australian national team. On July 20, 1988, he was part of a game where Australia won by a huge 62 points. They played against Papua New Guinea. Tony scored a try in that game.

Grand Final Wins

Tony helped the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs win a big championship. They won the 1988 Grand Final against the Balmain Tigers. Later, he joined the Brisbane Broncos. He played in their very first Grand Final in 1992. He helped the Broncos win their first-ever championship!

World Club Challenge

After winning the Grand Final, Tony traveled with the Broncos to England. They played in the 1992 World Club Challenge. This was a game against the British champions, Wigan. Tony came off the bench as a substitute player. The Brisbane Broncos became the first team from Australia's NSWRL league to win this match in Britain.

After Playing Rugby League

Coaching Career

After he stopped playing, Tony Currie became a coach. He coached a team called the London Broncos in the Super League. He was their coach from 1996 to 1998.

Club President

Tony also stayed involved with rugby league in other ways. For several years, he was the President of the Wests Panthers club.
