Tony Currie (born 25 December 1962) is a famous Australian former rugby league player. He played during the 1980s and 1990s. Tony is of Aboriginal background. He played for the Australian national team and represented Queensland in the Rugby League State of Origin series.

Tony Currie also played for several club teams. These included the Brisbane Broncos and the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in Australia. He helped both of these teams win championships. He also played for Leeds in England.

Tony Currie was a talented rugby league player. He achieved many great things during his time on the field.

Early Playing Days

In 1982, Tony Currie played for the Western Suburbs team. While there, he won a special award called the Rothmans Medal. This award was given to the best player in the Brisbane Rugby League premiership.

Playing for Australia

Tony Currie also played for the Australian national team, known as the Kangaroos. On 20 July 1988, he played in a big game against Papua New Guinea. Australia won by a huge score, and Tony scored a try in that game.

Club Successes

Tony Currie helped two major Australian clubs win their championships.

  • He was part of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs team that won the 1988 Grand Final. They played against the Balmain Tigers in that exciting match.
  • Later, he joined the Brisbane Broncos. He played in their very first Grand Final in 1992. He helped the Broncos win their first-ever championship title.

International Club Challenge

After winning the 1992 Grand Final, Tony Currie traveled to England with the Brisbane Broncos. They played in the 1992 World Club Challenge. This was a special game against the British champions, Wigan. Tony came off the bench as a substitute in this game. The Broncos made history by becoming the first Australian club to win this match in Britain.

After Playing Rugby League

After his playing career, Tony Currie continued to be involved in rugby league.

Coaching Role

Tony Currie became a coach for a Super League club in England. He coached the London Broncos from 1996 to 1998.
