Time Out's Journey: How It Grew
The very first Time Out magazine came out in 1968. Tony Elliott started it with Bob Harris. It began as a small, one-page paper listing events in London.
Early Days and Big Ideas
Back then, Time Out was a bit different. It shared new ideas about things like fairness for everyone and helping people. Early on, they printed about 5,000 copies. Over time, this grew to 110,000 copies each week!
Growing Across the World
In 1995, Time Out started to grow outside of London. They launched Time Out New York magazine. This was a big success! Soon, they added Time Out New York Kids in 1996. Because these magazines did so well, Time Out began to spread all over the world. They also started making travel magazines and city guides.
Moving to Digital Fun
Even though Time Out magazines were popular, the company faced a challenge when the internet became big. They needed to create websites and apps. When Time Out New York first started, it didn't have a website. It had to catch up with other online guides.
But Time Out kept working hard! In 2009, they launched their first iPhone app in New York, then in London. This app helped people find fun things to do right on their phones.
New Owners, New Growth
In 2011, Tony Elliott sold part of Time Out to a company called Oakley Capital. This helped Time Out grow even more online. They worked with tech companies to make better websites and apps for many cities. In 2012, they launched an iPad app for New York and London.
In 2016, Time Out Group became a public company. This means people can buy shares in the company.
Time Out During the Pandemic
In March 2020, when many people had to stay home because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Time Out changed its logo. It read Time Out In. The website then started suggesting fun activities people could do at home.
Time Out Publications: What They Offer
Time Out has content available in many cities around the world. This includes places like Paris, Lisbon, Miami, Sydney, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Dubai.
Time Out London
Time Out London magazine was a free weekly paper in London. It listed events and shared reviews about movies, plays, and art. It helped people find entertainment in the city. After 54 years, the printed Time Out London magazine stopped being made on June 23, 2022. But you can still read it online!
Time Out New York
Time Out New York (also called TONY) was the first magazine they launched in North America in 1995. Now, Time Out New York is free and comes out every other Wednesday. You can find copies in special boxes, newsstands, cafes, and other places in New York City. About 4.5 million people visit their website each month!
Time Out Guides: Your City Explorer
Time Out Media also creates guidebooks. These guides are written by people who live in the cities. They give tourists helpful tips about cool, hidden spots around the world.
You can also use their mobile apps with the city guides. The apps use GPS to show your location on Time Out maps. You can then find places to eat or events nearby. They also list "editor's picks" and other fun ideas.
Time Out Market: A Place to Eat and Explore
In April 2014, Time Out opened its first Time Out Market in Lisbon, Portugal. It's called Time Out Mercado da Ribeira. This market has 35 small restaurants and artisan shops. Chefs offer tasty local foods there.
More Time Out Markets have opened since then! In 2019, new markets opened in Miami, New York, Boston, Chicago, and Montreal. In 2021, one opened in Dubai. In 2024, a new location opened in Porto, Portugal. More markets are planned for the future!
Time Out's Growth Through New Companies
Time Out has grown by bringing other companies into its family.
In 2013, Time Out took over the Chicago publication. This was part of a plan to become a big international media company in 50 cities. Because of this, many Time Out magazines stopped printing and became digital-only. Only a few cities, like London and New York, still have printed Time Out magazines.
In 2014, Time Out bought a company called Huge City, which helps people find events. In 2016, they bought Hallstreet, a company that uses maps. Later that year, they also bought YPlan, which helped people find and book events.
