Anthony Hooper (born September 14, 1939 – died November 18, 2020) was an English musician. He was a singer, songwriter, and played the guitar. Tony was best known for helping to start the band called Strawbs. He formed the band with Dave Cousins and Ron Chesterman.
Tony Hooper was a very important part of the Strawbs band. He played the guitar and sang. The Strawbs started as a folk music band. Folk music often uses acoustic instruments like guitars and tells stories through songs.
After a few years, the music of Strawbs started to change. It moved more towards rock music and a style called progressive rock. Tony loved folk music, so he decided to leave the band in 1972. This was after they released an album called Grave New World.
But Tony came back to Strawbs later! He rejoined the band in 1983 and stayed for ten more years. Besides Strawbs, Tony also played guitar in a band called Pitchfork since 1986. This band played music for traditional English dances called Ceilidh and barn dances. He was also a member of another band called Misalliance.
Tony Hooper passed away on November 18, 2020, when he was 81 years old.
