Early Education
Tony Hunt went to University College Dublin. He earned a special law degree there in 1984. After that, he studied at King's Inns to become a barrister. A barrister is a type of lawyer who speaks for people in court.
Legal Work Before Becoming a Judge
Tony Hunt officially became a barrister in 1986. For many years, he worked as a lawyer. He often represented the government in court. This meant he helped to show why someone should be found guilty of breaking the law.
He worked on many different kinds of cases. These included serious cases where people broke the law. He also helped people who had issues with traffic rules. Sometimes, he helped people with problems about agreements or personal injuries.

Serving in the Circuit Court
Tony Hunt started his work as a judge in May 2007. His first role was as a judge in the Circuit Court. This court handles many types of cases, both criminal and civil. From 2012, he worked in the Midland area of Ireland.
Moving to the High Court
In October 2014, Judge Hunt was chosen to become a judge in the High Court. This is a higher court that deals with more serious cases. Many new judge positions were created at this time. This happened because a new court, the Court of Appeal, was set up.
Judge Hunt often hears very important cases. These include cases about serious crimes. He also handles requests to send people to other countries for legal reasons.
He is the main judge in charge of the Special Criminal Court. This court deals with serious organized crime and terrorism. He has heard cases about large criminal groups. In 2020, he described one such group as having a "boss and many smaller groups" that carry out "planned killings." This was the first time a judge explained the group's structure in court like that.
