Tony O'Shea was born on Valentia Island. This island is off the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland. He lived there for 20 years.

He went to University College Dublin. There, he studied English and Philosophy.

In 1981, Tony O'Shea started working full-time as a photographer. He worked for a magazine called In Dublin. After In Dublin magazine stopped being published, he became a press photographer. This means he took pictures for newspapers. He worked for the Sunday Business Post for many years.
