Anthony Lee Ross (born August 10, 1938) is a famous British author and artist. He creates amazing picture books for children. Many people know him for writing and drawing his 'Little Princess' books. He also drew the pictures for the popular 'Horrid Henry' series. Both of these became TV shows! Tony Ross also illustrates books by David Walliams, the 'Amber Brown' series by Paula Danziger, and the 'Dr. Xargle' series by Jeanne Willis. He also illustrated the 'Harry The Poisonous Centipede' series by Lynne Reid Banks.
Early Life and Education
Tony Ross was born in London, England, on August 10, 1938. His parents were Eric Turle Lee Ross and Effie Ross. He went to Helsby Grammar School. Later, he studied art at the Liverpool School of Art and Design.
Tony Ross's Career Journey
Tony Ross has had many interesting jobs. He worked as a cartoonist, drawing funny pictures. He was also a graphic designer, creating visual ideas for companies. Later, he became an art director at an advertising agency.
In 1976, he started working with Andersen Press, a publishing company. One of his first books with them was his own version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. For several years, he also taught art at Manchester Polytechnic. He led the illustration course there.
Tony Ross's books are very popular around the world. The 'Amber Brown' books, which he illustrated for Paula Danziger, are some of his most widely held works in libraries. His own book, I Want Two Birthdays (published in 2008), has been translated into ten different languages!
Awards and Recognition
Tony Ross has won several awards for his wonderful work.
- In 1986, he won the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis. This is a big German award for children's literature. He won it for the German version of his book, I'm coming to get you!.
- In 1990, his book Dr. Xargle's book of Earth Tiggers was highly praised. This book, about cats, was a runner-up for the Kate Greenaway Medal. This award celebrates the best children's book by a British artist.
- In 2004, Tony Ross was nominated for the international Hans Christian Andersen Award. This award recognizes a children's illustrator's important contributions to children's books.
