Tony B. Watlington was born in Fort Dix, New Jersey. He was the youngest of seven children in his family. He went to school in Harnett County, North Carolina.
He studied history education at North Carolina A&T State University. Later, he earned a higher degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
His Journey in Education
Tony B. Watlington began his career helping students in many ways. He started as a bus driver, making sure kids got to school safely. Then, he became a teacher in the classroom.
After teaching, he took on leadership roles. He became an administrator in Guilford County Schools. He worked his way up to be a chief leader there.
In January 2021, he became the superintendent of Rowan-Salisbury Schools. This was a big step in his career. In 2022, he was chosen to lead the School District of Philadelphia. He accepted this important job on April 1, 2022.
