Discovering Topbar's Past
The Story of Carrie Ingalls
Topbar might be a small place, but it has a cool connection to a famous family! Carrie Ingalls, who was the younger sister of Laura Ingalls Wilder, lived here. Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote the popular Little House on the Prairie books.
Carrie was a very independent young woman. Even though she was single, she decided to claim a piece of land in Topbar. This was called a homestead claim. It meant she could own land if she lived on it and improved it.
A Special Meeting in Topbar
While living in Topbar, Carrie met someone very important to her life. She met David N. Swanzey and his children. Later, Carrie and David got married. So, Topbar was the place where a new chapter began for Carrie Ingalls!
