Tor Hamer, born on January 20, 1983, is a former American professional boxer. He competed in boxing from 2008 to 2013. Before turning professional, he was a successful amateur boxer. In 2008, he won the National Golden Gloves title in the super heavyweight division.
About Tor Hamer
Tor Hamer grew up in both Harlem, New York, and near Baltimore. He went to private and charter schools. Later, he attended Penn State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree. His parents both work in education. His father studied at Harvard, and his mother went to Villanova. Tor Hamer is also the grandson of Fannie Lou Hamer. She was a famous civil rights activist.
Amateur Boxing Career
Tor Hamer trained at Gleason's Gym, a well-known boxing gym. During his amateur career, he had a great record. He won 34 matches and lost only one. At the National Championships, he had a close fight. He lost to a boxer named Lenroy Thompson. However, he later got his revenge. He beat Thompson in the Golden Gloves quarterfinals. This win helped him move forward in the tournament.
Professional Boxing Career
After winning the Golden Gloves in May 2008, Tor Hamer became very popular. Top boxing promoters wanted to sign him. These included famous names like Oscar De La Hoya and Don King. He decided to sign with DiBella Entertainment.
Hamer started his professional career on October 22, 2008. He won his first fight against Joseph Rabotte. He won by a technical knockout (TKO) in the second round. This means the referee stopped the fight because his opponent could not continue safely. His first loss came against Kelvin Price.
In June 2012, Hamer won the Prizefighter International Heavyweights tournament. This event took place in London. He first beat Marcelo Luiz Nascimento by a unanimous decision. Then, he knocked out Tom Dallas in just 29 seconds. In the final match, he faced Kevin Johnson. Johnson was expected to win the tournament. But Hamer defeated him to become the champion. Later, he lost two fights. He lost to Vyacheslav Glazkov and Andy Ruiz because he had to stop fighting in both matches.
