Torgeir Sæverud Higraff is an amazing explorer, a teacher, and an author. He loves learning about how people might have traveled across oceans long, long ago. Just like the famous explorer Thor Heyerdahl, Torgeir uses history, science, and old traditions to plan his adventures.
Torgeir Higraff's Ocean Expeditions
The Tangaroa Expedition
In 2002, Torgeir decided to try something big. He wanted to sail across the ocean, just like the famous Kon-Tiki expedition. In 2006, his own boat, the Tangaroa Expedition, sailed all the way from Peru to Raiatea in eastern Polynesia. This journey showed that ancient people could have made similar trips.
The Tangaroa boat was special. It used an improved sail and clever "guara" boards. These boards helped the raft steer better in the water. The Tangaroa even did better than the original Kon-Tiki expedition!
The Kon-Tiki2 Journey
In 2014, Torgeir suggested another exciting trip. He wanted to sail from Peru to Easter Island and back again. This new adventure was called the Kon-Tiki2 expedition.
In 2015, two rafts were built in Callao, Peru. They set sail and reached Easter Island in 43 days. This was a big achievement! They were the first rafts in modern times to sail all the way to Easter Island.
The journey back was much harder. The weather became very unusual and stormy. Because of the difficult conditions, the expedition had to stop. They ended their trip halfway between Easter Island and South America.
