The Tornjak (say "TOR-nyak") is a special kind of dog. Its full name is the Bosnian and Herzegovinian – Croatian Shepherd Dog. This dog comes from the mountains of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia.

The Tornjak is a sheep dog. This means it helps shepherds protect their sheep. It has been around for a very long time. People wrote about these dogs in old papers from the 1100s and 1300s.

A Special Mountain Dog

The Tornjak is known for being a strong and brave dog. It is very good at guarding farm animals. These dogs are also calm and friendly with their families. They are loyal and smart, which makes them good companions.

Saving the Tornjak Breed

At one point, there were very few Tornjak dogs left. They almost disappeared! But in the early 1970s, people started a special plan. They began a breeding program to help save the Tornjak. Thanks to these efforts, the Tornjak breed is now growing stronger.
