Scientific classification
Genus:
Toronia
Species:
toru

The Toronia toru is a special tree that grows only in New Zealand. It's the only type of tree in its group, called a genus, which is named Toronia. This tree is part of the Proteaceae family, which includes many beautiful plants like proteas from South Africa and Australia. The Toronia toru is one of just two plants from this big family that you can find in New Zealand.

What is the Toronia Toru?

The Toronia toru is an evergreen tree, meaning it keeps its leaves all year round. It grows in the northern part of New Zealand's North Island. This tree can reach a height of about 7 to 11 meters (23 to 36 feet).

How to Spot a Toronia Toru

The Toronia toru has long, thin green leaves. When it flowers, it produces small yellow blooms. Later, these flowers turn into fruits that are red to dark purple-blue. These fruits are fleshy, like berries.

Where Does it Grow?

You can find the Toronia toru mainly in the northern half of the North Island of New Zealand. It is a unique part of New Zealand's native plant life.

The Toronia Tree Family

For a long time, scientists thought the Toronia toru belonged to a different group of trees called Persoonia. However, in 1975, two scientists named Lawrie Johnson and Barbara G. Briggs studied it closely. They decided it was special enough to have its own group, or genus, which they named Toronia.

Why is it Unique?

Even though it was given its own group, some newer studies suggest that Toronia is still very closely related to the larger Persoonia group. This shows how scientists keep learning more about plants and how they are related to each other.
