Torrenueva Costa is a sunny town in southern Spain. It's located in the province of Granada, within the region of Andalusia. This town is quite new, becoming its own municipality in 2018. Before that, it was part of a larger town called Motril.
Torrenueva Costa sits on the central part of the Granada coast. It's near other small places like El Varadero and Carchuna. The town's name, Torrenueva, comes from an old defensive tower built in the 17th century. This tower is still there, right by the main road that connects Málaga and Almería.
Because of its beautiful location, Torrenueva Costa is a very popular place for tourists. Many people, especially from the Granada province and nearby areas like Jaén, visit during the summer. They come to enjoy the beaches and the good weather. In the colder months, the town is much quieter.

How Torrenueva Costa Became a Town
For a long time, many people in Torrenueva wanted their town to be separate from Motril. They wanted to manage their own local affairs.
Steps to Independence
- 1987: Torrenueva gained some self-rule. It became an EATIM, which is a special type of local government that has more independence within a larger municipality.
- 1993: Six years later, with Motril's agreement, the exact borders of Torrenueva were officially approved. This meant everyone knew where Torrenueva's area began and ended.
- 2010: Torrenueva asked Motril to become a completely independent municipality. However, the city of Motril said no at that time.
- 2018: Finally, on October 2, 2018, Torrenueva officially became its own independent municipality! This was a big moment for the community.
Choosing a New Name
When Torrenueva became independent, it needed a slightly different name. This was because there's another town called Torrenueva in Spain, located in the province of Ciudad Real. To avoid confusion, the people of Torrenueva held a vote in June 2017. They chose "Torrenueva Costa" to show its connection to the coast.
