Toru Sano (佐野 達, Sano Tōru, born November 15, 1963) is a former Japanese football player and manager. He was a defender who played for the Japan national team.

Playing Career

Toru Sano was born in Shizuoka, Japan, on November 15, 1963. After finishing his studies at Hosei University, he joined a football club called Nissan Motors in 1986. This club later became known as Yokohama Marinos.

Club Success

Between 1988 and 1990, Toru Sano's team, Nissan Motors, had a very successful period. They won Japan's three main football titles: the Japan Soccer League, the JSL Cup, and the Emperor's Cup. They even won these titles two years in a row!

Even though the team was very successful, Toru Sano sometimes found it hard to play in many matches because of injuries. In 1992, the Japan Soccer League was replaced by a new league called the J1 League. However, Toru Sano decided to retire from playing football in 1992 and did not play in the new J1 League.

Playing for Japan

Toru Sano made his first appearance for the Japan national team on January 27, 1988. This match was against the United Arab Emirates. He played the entire game in all the matches Japan played in 1988. He also took part in the 1990 Asian Games. In total, he played 9 games for Japan until 1990.

Coaching Career

After he stopped playing football, Toru Sano became a coach. He coached at several well-known Japanese football clubs:

Becoming a Manager

In 2005, he joined a club called Thespa Kusatsu, which was in the J2 League. By 2009, he became their manager.

In 2010, Toru Sano moved to V-Varen Nagasaki, a club in the Japan Football League (JFL). In the 2012 season, his team won the championship and was promoted to the J2 League. Even though they were successful, he decided to leave the club at the end of that season.

In 2013, he became the manager for Saurcos Fukui, a club in the Japanese Regional Leagues. He then moved to another JFL club, Verspah Oita, in 2016. He coached there until he resigned in 2017.
