Toru Sano (born November 15, 1963) is a former Japanese football player and manager. He was a talented defender who played for the Japan national team. Sano also had a long career as a football coach and manager after he stopped playing.

Playing Career Highlights

Toru Sano was born in Shizuoka, Japan. He started his football journey in high school and then played for Hosei University. After college, he joined a professional team.

Club Success with Nissan Motors

In 1986, Sano joined Nissan Motors. This club later became known as Yokohama Marinos. He played as a defender for them.

The years 1988 to 1990 were very successful for Nissan Motors. The team won three major titles in Japan. They won the Japan Soccer League, the JSL Cup, and the Emperor's Cup. They even won these titles two years in a row!

Sano played in 79 club games and scored 1 goal during his career. He retired from playing in 1992.

Playing for Japan's National Team

Toru Sano also represented his country. He played for the Japan national team. His first game for Japan was on January 27, 1988, against the United Arab Emirates.

He played in all of Japan's matches in 1988. He also took part in the 1990 Asian Games. In total, Sano played 9 games for Japan between 1988 and 1990.

Coaching and Managing Teams

After he stopped playing football, Toru Sano became a coach. He worked with several teams, sharing his knowledge and experience.

Early Coaching Roles

Sano coached at his former club, Yokohama Marinos, from 1993 to 1996. He then coached for Yokohama Flügels (1997-1998) and Kyoto Purple Sanga (1999-2003).

Becoming a Manager

In 2005, Sano joined J2 League club Thespa Kusatsu. He became their manager in 2009.

In 2010, he moved to Japan Football League (JFL) club V-Varen Nagasaki. Under his leadership, the club won the championship in 2012. This win helped them get promoted to the J2 League. Even after this success, he decided to leave the team at the end of that season.

Later Managerial Positions

In 2013, Sano became the manager for Regional Leagues club Saurcos Fukui. He then moved to JFL club Verspah Oita in 2016. He managed Verspah Oita until 2017.
