Toshimi Kikuchi (菊池 利三, Kikuchi Toshimi) is a Japanese football player and manager who was born on July 17, 1973. He played as a defender. His older brother, Shinkichi Kikuchi, was also a professional footballer. As of 2025, Toshimi Kikuchi is the assistant manager for Iwate Grulla Morioka, a club in the JFL.

Playing Career: A Football Journey

Toshimi Kikuchi started his football journey in his hometown of Tono. After finishing high school, he joined Verdy Kawasaki in 1992. This was the same club where his older brother, Shinkichi, also played for many years.

Early Years and Success

Kikuchi made his debut in 1995. He quickly became an important player, often playing as a right or left side back. A side back is a defender who plays on the sides of the field. They help protect the goal and also join in attacks.

During his time with Verdy Kawasaki, the team achieved great success:

  • They finished second in the J1 League in 1995.
  • They won the 1996 Emperor's Cup in 1996.

Moving to Other Teams

After 1996, Kikuchi's chances to play regularly became fewer. He then played for several other clubs on loan. A loan means a player temporarily moves to another team. He played for:

Kikuchi returned to Tokyo Verdy and continued playing until the end of the 2002 season, when he retired as a player.

Managerial Career: Leading Teams

After ending his playing career, Toshimi Kikuchi began coaching. He started at Tokyo Verdy in 2003. For many years, he mainly coached youth teams in his home area of Iwate Prefecture until 2012.

Becoming a Head Manager

In 2017, Kikuchi took on a bigger role. He signed with his local club, Grulla Morioka, which is now known as Iwate Grulla Morioka. He became their manager in the J3 League.

Later, on September 4, 2023, Kikuchi became the official manager of Reilac Shiga, a club in the JFL. He had first joined them as an assistant manager. He left Reilac Shiga in 2024 when his contract ended.

Return to Iwate Grulla Morioka

On December 19, 2024, it was announced that Kikuchi would return to Iwate Grulla Morioka. He was appointed as the assistant manager for the club starting in 2025.
