Shinkichi Kikuchi (菊池 新吉, Kikuchi Shinkichi, born April 12, 1967) is a former Japanese football player. He was a talented goalkeeper. He played for the Japan national team. His younger brother, Toshimi, was also a footballer.

Shinkichi Kikuchi's Club Journey

Shinkichi Kikuchi was born in Tono, Japan, on April 12, 1967. After finishing high school, he joined a football club called Yomiuri in 1986. This club later changed its name to Verdy Kawasaki and then Tokyo Verdy.

Early Success with Yomiuri

With Yomiuri, Kikuchi helped his team win many important titles. They won the Japan Soccer League championship three times. They also won the JSL Cup once and the Emperor's Cup twice. In 1987, the club even won the 1987 Asian Club Championship, which is a big competition in Asia.

Joining the J1 League Era

In 1992, the Japan Soccer League changed into a new league called the J1 League. Kikuchi's club continued its success. They won the J1 League championship in 1993 and 1994. They also won the J.League Cup three times in a row from 1992 to 1994. In 1996, they won the Emperor's Cup again. Shinkichi Kikuchi was a very important player during this successful time for the club.

Moving to Kawasaki Frontale

By 1999, Kikuchi played less often for Tokyo Verdy. In 2000, he moved to Kawasaki Frontale for a short time. He returned to Tokyo Verdy in 2001. After that season, he decided to retire from playing football.

Shinkichi Kikuchi's National Team Career

Shinkichi Kikuchi also played for the Japan national team. He made his first appearance for Japan on September 27, 1994, in a game against Australia.

Playing for Japan

In October 1994, he played in all the matches at the 1994 Asian Games. He was also chosen to be part of the Japan team for the 1995 King Fahd Cup. However, he was a reserve goalkeeper for that tournament and did not play in any games. In total, he played 7 games for Japan until 1995.
