Tow Bay facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Tow Bay is a small bay located in a very cold and distant part of the world! It's found on the west side of Candlemas Island, which is one of the South Sandwich Islands.

This bay is quite tiny, only about 0.4 kilometers (or 0.2 nautical miles) long. It sits just south of a place called Vulcan Point.

Discovering Tow Bay

Tow Bay was first mapped and given its name in 1930. This was done by a group of scientists and explorers known as the Discovery Investigations (DI). They were on a ship called the Discovery II.

The Discovery II was a famous research ship. It explored the waters around Antarctica and the South Atlantic Ocean. The crew on board helped to map many places for the first time. They also studied the ocean and its creatures.

Where is Tow Bay?

Tow Bay is part of the South Sandwich Islands. This is a chain of small, volcanic islands in the southern Atlantic Ocean. They are very remote and often covered in ice and snow.

The islands are known for their harsh weather. They are home to many types of wildlife, like penguins and seals. People do not live permanently on these islands. Only scientists and researchers visit them.
