The Tower Fire Hall is an old fire station located in Tower, Minnesota. It was built around 1895. This building was the very first fire station in the area known as the Iron Range. Back then, towns were built quickly with lots of wooden buildings packed close together. There weren't good water systems to fight fires, so fires were a huge danger.

The Tower Fire Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This means it's an important historical building. It was recognized because it shows how serious the fire danger was in the region and how people worked to protect their towns.

What is the Iron Range?

The Iron Range is a part of northern Minnesota. It's famous for its rich deposits of iron ore. Many towns, like Tower, grew quickly because of iron mining in the late 1800s. These mining towns were often built fast, using wood, which made them very risky for fires.

Why Fire Stations Were So Important

In the early days of the Iron Range, fire was a constant threat. Buildings were mostly made of wood. They were often built very close to each other. Also, there wasn't a good system for getting water to put out fires. This meant a small fire could quickly spread and destroy an entire town.

The Tower Fire Hall was built to help protect the community. It housed equipment and firefighters ready to respond to emergencies. Having a dedicated fire station was a big step in keeping the people and buildings of Tower safe.

A Historic Building

The Tower Fire Hall is a great example of a building from its time. It shows the style of architecture popular in the late 1800s. Being on the National Register of Historic Places means it's preserved for future generations. It helps us remember the challenges and solutions of early mining towns.
