The Town Club is a special club for women located in Portland, Oregon, in the United States. It has a long history of supporting its members and the community.
About the Town Club
The Town Club was started in 1928. When it first began, many of its members were the wives of important business people in Portland. The club's main goal was to help its members grow their minds and bodies. It also wanted to create fun chances for social events, learning, and helping others.
In 1929, a kind person named Mrs. T. B. Wilcox gave the club the land for its building. By 1930, the club had grown quite a bit, with 350 members. Even though it's mainly for women, men are also welcome to join. The Town Club is still active and important in Portland today.
The Club Building
The building where the Town Club meets was built in 1930. It was designed in a style called Mediterranean Revival. This style often uses features like red tile roofs and stucco walls, making buildings look like they belong in sunny Mediterranean countries. The architects who designed it were Johnson, Wallwork, & Johnston.
Because the land was on a steep hill, the building was made with three different "split" levels. It has a pretty brick outside and a roof covered with tiles. When it was first built, the club even had bedrooms. These rooms were for members who came back to Portland for visits.
In 1987, the Town Club building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical place that should be protected. The building is still standing and is used as the club's home and a place for different events.
