Traction facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Traction is a word that means a few different things, but they all have to do with pulling, gripping, or moving something. It's often about the force that makes things move or stops them from slipping.

What is Traction?

Traction is mainly about the grip or friction between two surfaces. Think about how car tires grip the road, or how your shoes grip the ground when you walk. This grip is a type of traction. Without enough traction, things would just slide around!

Traction in Engineering

In engineering, traction is the force that helps a wheel or a track grip a surface. This force allows vehicles like cars, trains, or even bicycles to move forward without slipping.

  • Adhesive friction or force: This is the main idea of traction. It's the friction that helps things stick together or grip a surface. For example, when a train's wheels push against the tracks, the friction (traction) helps the train move.
  • Traction vector: This is a more scientific way to talk about the force on a surface. Imagine pushing on a wall; the force you apply is a "vector" because it has both strength and direction. In traction, it includes forces that push straight down (normal) and forces that slide sideways (shear).

Traction in Electricity and Movement

Traction is also used when we talk about things that move using electricity, especially big machines.

  • Railway electric traction: This is how electric trains move! Instead of using a diesel engine, these trains use powerful electric motors to turn their wheels. The electricity comes from overhead lines or a special rail.
  • Traction motor: This is a special type of electric motor designed to provide the power needed to move large vehicles like trains, trams, or even some electric cars. They are built to be strong and reliable.
  • Traction elevator: Many modern elevators are called traction elevators. They work by using ropes or cables that go over a wheel, which is turned by a motor. A heavy counterweight helps balance the elevator car, making it easier for the motor to lift and lower it.
