The Malmö tramway was a system of trams that used to run in the city of Malmö, Sweden. Trams are like small trains that run on tracks in the street. This tramway was a big part of Malmö's history for many years. Today, a small part of the old network still exists as a special historic line, about 2 kilometers long.

History of Malmö Trams

The Malmö tramway operated for a long time, from 1887 until 1973. When it first started in 1887, the trams were pulled by horses! These were called horse cars. Imagine a tram moving along the street with horses leading the way.

Over time, technology changed. By 1906, the horse cars were replaced by electric trams. These trams ran on electricity, which made them much faster and more efficient. Electric trams were a modern way to travel back then. The last electric tram stopped running in 1973. After that, buses took over as the main public transport in Malmö.

Tram Routes and Colors

The Malmö tramway had several different routes, or "lines," that went to various parts of the city. Each line often had a special color to help people know which route it was. Here are some of the main lines that operated:

  • line 1 (red) ran from 1907 until 1967
  • line 2 (blue) ran from 1907 until 1940
  • line 3 (white) ran from 1906 until 1964
  • line 4 (yellow) ran from 1907 until 1973
  • line 5 ran from 1915 until 1928
  • line 6 ran from 1916 until 1919, and again from 1924 until 1949
  • line 7 ran from 1918 until 1949
  • line 8 ran from 1928 until 1930

The Tram Cars

When the tramway first started, the service used special tram cars. These were called "two-axle motor cars." This means they had two sets of wheels (axles) and their own engine to move. From 1949 onwards, these older cars were gradually replaced by newer, more modern trams.

The Special Museum Tram Line

Even though the main tram system closed in 1973, a small part of it still exists today! There is a special line, about 2 kilometers long, that is used for historical purposes. This means it's kept to show people what the old trams were like. This historic line starts at Malmöhus Castle and ends at a museum. It's a great way to experience a piece of Malmö's past!
