The Tranquility Grange No. 344 is a special old building in Lincolnville, Maine. It's known as a Grange hall, which is like a community center for farmers and their families. This building was built in 1908 and has been a very important place for people to meet and hold events for over a hundred years. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 because of its history and unique style.

What is the Tranquility Grange Hall?

The Tranquility Grange Hall is located in Lincolnville, Maine. It sits on a sloped piece of land. From the street, you see one main floor. But on the side and back, you can see a full basement level.

Building Design and Features

The building has a special roof shape called a hip roof. It also has a small dormer window on the front. The outside walls are covered with wooden shingles. The front of the building looks balanced. It has a main entrance set back in the middle. On each side of the entrance, there are two windows grouped together.

Inside the main floor, you'll find a small entry area. There's also a place to hang coats and a small kitchen. The biggest part of this floor is the main hall. It has a stage at one end. The floor is made of hardwood. The lower part of the walls has wood panels. The upper walls and ceiling are covered with decorative pressed tin.

What's Downstairs?

The downstairs area is also very useful. It has a dining room, which is larger than the upstairs kitchen. There are also restrooms on this level. You can get to the downstairs by stairs near the stage. Or, you can use another entrance on the side of the building.

History of the Grange Hall

The Tranquility Grange Hall was built in 1908. This was actually the third building for the Grange organization. The group itself started in 1898.

Why Were There Three Halls?

The first two Grange halls were both destroyed by fire. So, this building was constructed on the same spot where the second one stood. It was built to last and serve the community.

A Community Hub

Since it was built, the Grange hall has been a central spot for the rural community. It has hosted many social gatherings and civic meetings. For example, town meetings were held here until the 1950s. It has always been a place where people could come together.
