The Translation of the Relics of Saint Nicholas from Myra to Bari is a special religious and folk holiday. It is celebrated every year on May 9. For churches that follow the old Julian Calendar, May 9 falls on May 22 of the modern Gregorian Calendar. This holiday remembers when the holy remains (relics) of Saint Nicholas were moved. They were taken from Myra (which is now in Turkey) to Bari, a city in Italy. This move happened to keep them safe from harm. To this day, the relics are still kept in the Basilica di San Nicola in Bari.

Why Saint Nicholas's Relics Were Moved

In the year 1087, some important people and traders from Bari, Italy, learned where the relics of Saint Nicholas were kept. Monks were guarding these holy remains in Myra. The people from Bari wanted to protect the relics from danger.

According to one story, the monks in Myra became suspicious. They asked the visitors, "Why are you asking about this? Are you planning to take the holy saint's remains from here? Do you want to move them to your own country?" The monks made it clear they would not give up the relics easily.

The men from Bari tried different ways to get the relics, even using force. They managed to take hold of the relics. An old writer described how the people of Myra felt when they found out:

Today, some people believe the relics should be returned to Myra. Professor Nevzat Cevik, who leads archaeological digs in Demre (Myra), has suggested that the Turkish government should ask for the relics back. He believes Saint Nicholas always wanted to be buried in Myra.

There is another story from the people of Venice, Italy. They also claim to have some parts of Saint Nicholas's relics. The Venetians said they brought the remains back to Venice. But on their way, they left one arm of Saint Nicholas in Bari.
