Travelcard Zone 3 facts for kids
Travelcard Zone 3 is an important part of how people pay for public transport in London. Imagine London is like a target, with different rings or "zones." Zone 3 is the third ring out from the very center of the city. These zones help work out how much a Travelcard costs to use the city's transport system.

What Are Travelcard Zones?
London's public transport system uses a special "zonal system." This system divides the city into nine different areas, or zones. These zones are like imaginary circles spreading out from the middle of London. The main reason for these zones is to help decide the price of your journey.
Why Do We Have Zones?
Having zones makes sure that people pay a fair price for their travel. If you travel a short distance, you pay less. If you travel a longer distance, you pay more. This system helps keep transport costs reasonable for everyone.
How Many Zones Are There?
London has nine Travelcard zones in total. Zone 1 is right in the heart of the city. As you move further out, the zone numbers get higher. So, Zone 3 is a bit further from the center than Zone 1 or Zone 2.
How Travelcard Zone 3 Works
Travelcard Zone 3 is used to calculate the cost of a Travelcard. A Travelcard is a special ticket that lets you use different types of transport. It can be for a day, a week, or even longer.
Travelcard Fares
The price of your Travelcard depends on how many zones you want to travel through. If your journey starts or ends in Zone 3, or passes through it, it will affect the cost. For example, a Travelcard that covers Zones 1-3 will cost more than one that only covers Zones 1-2.
Different Types of Transport
The zonal system is used for some types of transport, but not all.
- London Underground: The famous "Tube" trains use the zone system. Your fare depends on which zones you travel through.
- Docklands Light Railway: The DLR, which is a modern train system, also uses the zones.
- Buses and Trams: For buses and trams, it's different. They have a flat fare, which means you pay the same price no matter how far you travel within London. The zones do not affect bus or tram fares.
