The Travellers' Rest Inn is a special old building in Greenfield, Ohio, United States. It used to be an inn, a place where people could stay overnight. This historic inn was built a long time ago, in the early 1800s. It is important to local history, which is why it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A Look Back: The Inn's Early Days

The Travellers' Rest Inn was built in 1812. It was the very first building in Greenfield made of stone. When it first opened, the inn was a busy place. Travelers would gather in a big common room. They ate meals at long wooden tables.

How Travelers Arrived

Many people came to the inn by stagecoach. Others arrived by boat on Paint Creek. This creek flows into the Scioto River. The inn was a key stop for people traveling through the area.

The First Post Office

Just one year after the inn opened, it became even more important. Greenfield's very first post office was set up there. A man named Noble Crawford was in charge of the post office. He was also the person who supervised the building of the inn.

Changes Over Time

The Travellers' Rest Inn did not stay an inn forever. In 1829, it closed its doors as a hotel. The building then became a home and office for doctors.

A Doctor's Home

Greenfield's first doctor, Garvin Johnson, married Noble Crawford's daughter. Doctor Johnson moved into the old inn. He even set up his doctor's office inside part of the building. After him, another doctor in Greenfield also used the building as both a home and an office.

The Inn's Design and New Home

The Travellers' Rest Inn is a two-story building. It has a roof with a pointed top, called a gabled roof. This roof is covered with shingles. The front of the building is wide, with three sections, while the sides are narrower.

Moving to a New Spot

The Greenfield Historical Society bought the inn. They carefully moved it to its current spot. They placed the old building on a strong concrete foundation. This helped protect it for the future.

The Inn Today

Today, the Greenfield Historical Society uses the former inn as its main office. It is also one of several house museums they operate. A house museum is a place where you can visit and learn about how people lived in the past.

A Historic Landmark

In 1979, the Travellers' Rest Inn was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). It earned this special listing for two reasons. First, it played an important role in the history of Greenfield. Second, its architecture, or how it was built, is also historically significant. Another local building, the Samuel Smith House and Tannery, is also on the National Register.
