Tratado de Alcanizes
Treaty of Alcañices (1297), currently kept in the Torre do Tombo National Archive.

The Treaty of Alcañices was an important agreement made in 1297. It was signed in a place called Alcañices between two kings: King Denis of Portugal and King Fernando IV of Castile. This treaty helped to create peace and set the borders between the countries of Portugal and Castile (which is now part of Spain).

What Was the Treaty of Alcañices?

The Treaty of Alcañices was a peace treaty. It ended a short war between the Kingdom of Portugal and the Kingdom of Castile. It also clearly defined the borders between these two countries. These borders are very similar to the ones we see between Portugal and Spain today.

Who Were the Kings Involved?

The two main people who signed the treaty were King Denis of Portugal and King Fernando IV of Castile.

King Denis of Portugal

King Denis was the grandson of King Alfonso X of Castile. He was known more for being a good administrator than a warrior. This means he was good at managing his country. Even though he preferred peace, he went to war with Castile in 1295.

King Fernando IV of Castile

King Fernando IV was the ruler of Castile. He was younger than King Denis when the treaty was signed. This agreement was important for his kingdom too.

What Did the Treaty Change?

The treaty changed some land ownership. Portugal gave up two villages, Serpa and Moura, to Castile. In return, Portugal gained the town of Olivença.

Defining the Borders

One of the most important parts of the treaty was setting the exact border. It confirmed that Portugal owned the Algarve region. This helped to create the modern-day border we know today.

A New Alliance and Peace

The treaty also created a friendship and a promise to help each other if attacked. This led to a long period of peace, lasting about 40 years, between Portugal and Castile.

A Royal Marriage

To make the peace even stronger, King Fernando IV of Castile married King Denis's daughter. Her name was Infanta Constance of Portugal. She became the Queen of Castile. This marriage helped to connect the two royal families. It also showed how important the new alliance was.
