The Treaty of Fort St. Stephens was an agreement signed between the United States government and the Choctaw Nation. It is also known as the Treaty of Choctaw Trading House. This important treaty was signed on October 24, 1816, at Fort St. Stephens.

Through this treaty, the Choctaw Nation gave up about 10,000 acres (about 40 square kilometers) of their land. This land was located east of the Tombigbee River. In return, the United States agreed to pay the Choctaw Nation $6,000 each year for twenty years. This amount would be worth almost $80,000 in today's money.

The treaty began by naming the people involved in making the agreement. It stated that James Madison, who was the President of the United States, sent three special representatives: General John Coffee, John Rhea, and John M'Kee. On the other side were the leaders and warriors of the Choctaw Nation. They met together to agree on the terms.

  • The Choctaw Nation agreed to give certain lands to the United States.
  • The United States agreed to pay the Choctaw Nation $6,000 every year for 20 years. They also promised to give $10,000 worth of goods or merchandise to the Choctaw people.
