Tree baler facts for kids
A tree baler is a special machine that helps wrap up trees. It makes them much smaller and easier to move around or store. When trees are wrapped, they take up less space and are less likely to get damaged during travel. These machines are often used at large plant farms where many trees are grown and sold. Before balers, people had to tie each tree by hand, which took a lot of time and effort!
What is a Tree Baler?
A tree baler works by gently squeezing the branches of a tree close to its trunk. Imagine a funnel: the tree goes through it, and as it passes, the branches are pushed inward. After the branches are compressed, the machine wraps them tightly with string or netting. This keeps the tree in its compact shape for shipping and storage.
How Tree Balers Work
Tree balers use a funnel-like opening to compress the tree's branches. Once the branches are squeezed tight against the trunk, the machine wraps them. This wrapping keeps the tree neat and compact.
- Manual Balers: Some balers are operated by hand. Usually, one person pushes the tree through the funnel, and another person wraps it. These are simpler and don't squeeze the trees as tightly as bigger machines. They are often used at places where you buy Christmas trees to help you take your tree home easily.
- Mechanized Balers: These are powered machines that do both the pushing and the wrapping automatically. They are much faster and can wrap over 100 trees in just one hour! This makes them very useful for large nurseries that need to ship many trees.
History of the Tree Baler
The idea for the motorized Christmas tree baler came from Pennsylvania in 1944. This invention made it much easier for tree farms to prepare trees for sale and transport.
