Treets were a popular candy brand known for its tasty chocolate-covered centers. These treats were sold by a company called Mars Limited in many European countries. You might know Mars for other candies like M&M's or Snickers!
Treets were special because they had a hard, glazed candy shell that helped the chocolate inside stay neat. Their famous slogan was "Melt in your mouth, not in your hand." This catchy phrase was first used in 1967. It meant you could enjoy the candy without getting messy chocolate on your fingers.
The History of Treets
Treets first appeared in the United Kingdom in the 1960s. The original candy had a peanut covered in milk chocolate, all wrapped in a dark brown candy shell. These were later called Peanut Treets and came in a yellow packet.
But there were other kinds too!
- Peanut Treets: These had a peanut center and came in a yellow packet.
- Toffee Treets: These had a chewy toffee center and were sold in a blue packet.
- Chocolate Treets: These were simply a button-shaped piece of milk chocolate with the same glazed coating. They came in a brown packet.
All three types shared the same shiny, glazed outer shell.
Why Treets Disappeared
Mars stopped making Treets in 1988. Before that, Chocolate Treets were replaced by a similar candy called Minstrels. Minstrels are also chocolate buttons with a shiny coating.
Peanut Treets were replaced by M&M's, which are also chocolate-covered peanuts with a candy shell. M&M's come in many different colors, while Peanut Treets were usually just dark brown. Toffee Treets were briefly sold under a new name, Relays, but then they were stopped completely.
Treets Today
Mars briefly brought Peanut Treets back to the UK in July 2009. However, the company later let go of its rights to the brand in 2017.
In 2018, a different company called Katjes International launched Treets again in France. Since then, the Treets brand has grown! As of 2021, you can find more than just the classic candy-coated shell. The range now includes:
- Peanut Caramel Choco and Sea Salt
- Peanut Butter Caramel Bites
- Peanut Butter Cups
- Jars of Creamy Peanut Butter and Choco Peanut Butter
This means Treets has expanded from just a candy to a variety of peanut butter snacks and spreads!
