Treforest High Level railway station was a train station located in Treforest, Wales. It had two platforms and four railway lines. The station was found north of Llantwit Road.
A Look Back: Its History
The Treforest High Level station first opened on March 16, 1896. It was built by a company called the Barry Railway.
Later, on January 1, 1922, the Barry Railway joined with the Great Western Railway. Other railway companies, like the Taff Vale Railway (TVR), also joined at this time.
Why the Name Change?
On July 1, 1924, the station's name changed to Treforest High Level. This was done to avoid confusion. There was another station nearby, also called Treforest, which belonged to the TVR. That station was renamed Treforest Low Level at the same time.
The station had two platforms. These were on the outer tracks of the four lines that ran through the area. A long tunnel, called Graig or Pwllgwaun tunnel, was located not far from the station. Today, part of the old railway track near the tunnel is a car park for the local university.
When Did It Close?
Passenger trains stopped using the old Barry line north of Tonteg Junction on May 5, 1930. Instead, they went through Pontypridd Central and Treforest Low Level. Because of this change, Treforest High Level station closed down.
A signal box, which controlled the train signals, also existed here. It closed on March 15, 1934. The railway line from Trehafod to Tonteg Junction closed in June 1951. The rest of the old Barry Railway route stayed open until September 1963.
Interestingly, between October 1943 and September 1944, one of the railway lines here was used to store American S-160 steam locomotives.
What's There Now?
Today, you won't find any parts of the old Treforest High Level station. A police vehicle maintenance depot now stands on the site. However, some steps that led to the station's main entrance can still be seen at the end of Hilda Street in Trefforest.
