A Family of Footballers
Trent Cummings comes from a family with a strong history in Australian rules football. He was the third person in his family to play for the Fitzroy club.
Joe Johnson: A Pioneer
Trent's great-grandfather was Joe Johnson. Joe was a Fitzroy footballer many years ago. He is famous for being the first Indigenous Australian player in the Victorian Football League (VFL). The VFL later became the AFL.
Other Family Players
Trent's older brother, Robert Cummings, also played for Fitzroy. Their father, Percy, was a player for the Hawthorn Football Club. It's clear that football talent runs in the Cummings family!
Trent's AFL Career
Trent Cummings was a talented young player. He was chosen as the sixth pick in the 1993 AFL Draft. This meant he was one of the first players picked by a team that year.
Playing for Fitzroy
Trent spent three seasons with the Fitzroy Lions, from 1994 to 1996. He played in 27 games for the club. However, it was a tough time for Fitzroy, and Trent only experienced three wins during his time there.
Moving to West Coast
At the end of the 1996 season, the Fitzroy club merged with another team to form the Brisbane Lions. Trent did not join the new Brisbane Lions team. Instead, the West Coast Eagles picked him in the national draft. This happened even though he had recently had surgery on his knee.
Time with the Eagles
Trent played only two games for the West Coast Eagles in the 1997 season. He spent most of that year playing in the Western Australian Football League (WAFL). He played for the Peel Thunder team in the WAFL.
Career Ends Early
Sadly, a knee injury ended Trent's professional football career. He got hurt during a practice match before the 1998 season began. This injury meant he could no longer play at the top level.
