The Trew Era Café is a special kind of coffeehouse in Hackney, East London. It's a non-profit place, which means it uses any money it makes to help its mission, not just to make owners rich. The café opened in March 2015.
Comedian and activist Russell Brand started the café. He used money from his 2014 book, Revolution, to fund it. The name "Trew Era" comes from its location on the New Era estate. It also connects to Brand's web series, The Trews.
In September 2016, Brand gave the café to The Rehabilitation for Addicted Prisoners Trust (RAPT). This organization helps people get a fresh start in life. Their London Recovery Hub is right next door to the Trew Era Cafe.
Why the Café Started
Russell Brand wanted to create a place that helps people. He said he would use his book's profits to start a social enterprise. This is a business that aims to do good for society, not just make money. His goal was to employ people who were rebuilding their lives.
The café is on the New Era estate. In 2014, the people living there faced a big problem. A new owner wanted to triple their rents, which meant many families might lose their homes. The residents fought against this plan. Russell Brand supported them and helped bring attention to their cause. Because of their efforts, the new owner backed out. About 100 families on the New Era estate were able to stay in their homes.
About the Café Building
Work on the café started in February 2015. It's located next to a printing shop and a barbershop. The building used to be a clothes shop but had been empty for a while. The Trew Era Café officially opened on March 26, 2015. About 200 people came to celebrate the opening day.
Russell Brand shared his hopes for the café. He wants to create a chain of similar businesses. These businesses would support themselves and help people. He told the crowd that changing things doesn't always come from politicians. Instead, it comes from people starting community efforts, like what happened at the New Era estate.
He explained that the café would be run by people who are getting back on their feet. He called it a "not for profit" model. It's a new kind of business that supports itself and helps the community. By July 2015, the café employed seven people who were rebuilding their lives. They were paid £9.15 per hour, and there was also a manager.
