Starting in Public Service
Risma, as she is often called, began her career working for the government in Surabaya. She started as a low-ranking public servant. Over more than 20 years, she worked her way up. She became the head of Surabaya's Program Controlling Division. Later, she led the city's Landscape and Cleanliness Department.
Making Surabaya Greener
During her time in public service, Risma helped Surabaya become a much greener city. She worked to make open spaces, like cemeteries, better at absorbing water. This helped reduce flooding. She also added green areas along main roads and created city forests. Her efforts helped make floods less severe and shorter.
Improving Public Services
Risma was known for visiting public service offices without warning. She would check on how things were being run. She encouraged officials to do their best for the public.
Minister of Social Affairs
On December 23, 2020, Risma was chosen to be the Minister of Social Affairs. She joined President Joko Widodo's team. One of her first big goals was to improve how aid was given out. This was very important during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. She wanted to make sure aid reached people fairly. She worked to change how data was managed and how social aid was delivered. Her plan was to switch from giving out cash to using more transparent bank transfers. She left her role as Social Minister on September 6, 2024. She planned to run for Governor of East Java in the 2024 East Java gubernatorial election.
Awards and Recognition
During her time as Mayor, Surabaya won many awards. These included the ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable City Award in 2012. The city also received the Adipura Kencana, which is Indonesia's top environmental award.
Personal Recognition
Risma herself has received many honors. Forbes Indonesia named her one of the 10 most inspiring women in 2013. Fortune magazine also listed her as one of the world’s 50 greatest leaders. The City Mayors Foundation, a group that studies cities, also recognized her as a top mayor. In March 2016, she received the Ideal Mother Award at Cairo University. This award was given by the Islamic Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO).
An Award in London
In April 2014, Risma traveled to London to accept an award called the United Europe Award. This award was given by an organization called the Europe Business Assembly. Risma explained that her team had paid a participation fee of £4,000 to attend the event. In 2019, she was also given honorary citizenship in Busan, South Korea.
