Tri Rismaharini studied Architecture and Urban Development Management at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember in Surabaya. She earned her bachelor's degree and later a master's degree from this university. In 2015, she also received a doctoral degree from the same institute.
Her Career in Public Service
Rismaharini started her career working for the government in Surabaya. She was a civil servant for over 20 years before she became mayor. During this time, she worked her way up to lead important departments, like the Program Controlling Division and the Landscape and Cleanliness Department in Surabaya.
Making Surabaya Greener
As mayor, Rismaharini worked to make Surabaya a better place to live. She helped increase the amount of open green spaces, like parks and even cemeteries, which helped the city absorb water and reduce flooding. She also added green areas along main roads and created city forests. These efforts helped reduce how long and how bad floods were in Surabaya.
Improving Public Services
Rismaharini was known for visiting public service offices without warning. She would check on how well things were being run and encourage officials to do their best for the public.
Becoming Social Affairs Minister
On 23 December 2020, Rismaharini was chosen to be the Social Minister by President Joko Widodo. She took over this role to help improve how aid was given out, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. One of her first goals was to make sure that social aid was given out more fairly and clearly, by using bank transfers instead of cash. She left her role as Social Minister on 6 September 2024, because she wanted to run for Governor of East Java.
Awards and Recognition
During her time as mayor, Surabaya won many awards for its environmental efforts. These include the ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable City Award in 2012 and the Adipura Kencana, which is Indonesia's top environmental award.
Rismaharini herself has also received many honors:
- In 2013, Forbes Indonesia magazine named her one of the 10 most inspiring women.
- Fortune magazine listed her as one of the world's 50 greatest leaders.
- The City Mayors Foundation, a group that studies cities, also named her one of the top mayors.
- In March 2016, she received the Ideal Mother Award 2016 from the Islamic Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) at Cairo University.
International Recognition
In April 2014, Rismaharini traveled to London to accept an award called the United Europe Award. She paid a participation fee for this event. When she returned to Surabaya, she showed off the award in a parade.
