Tribhuvana Mahadevi II facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Tribhuvana Mahadevi II, also known as Prithivi Mahadevi, was a powerful queen who ruled the Kingdom of Toshala in ancient Kalinga. This area is now part of India. She was queen from 890 to 896 AD and belonged to the Bhauma-Kara dynasty.

Early Life and Family

Tribhuvana Mahadevi II was the daughter of King Janmejaya I. Her father was a ruler from the Somavamshi dynasty. She married Subhakara IV, who was also known as Kusumahara II. He ruled his kingdom from 865 to 882 AD. Sadly, the couple did not have any children who survived.

Becoming Queen

After her husband, Subhakara IV, passed away, his brother, Sivakaradeva III, became the next king. Sivakaradeva III ruled from 882 to 890 AD. When King Sivakaradeva III died in 890, Tribhuvana Mahadevi II took his place on the throne. It is believed that her father, King Janmejaya I, played a big part in her becoming queen.

She often praised her father in official documents. One old stone carving, called the Brahmesvara inscription, tells us more. It says that her father, Janmejaya, defeated the king of the Odra country in battle. This victory likely made her position as queen stronger.

Challenges and End of Reign

Tribhuvana Mahadevi II's rule was supported by her father. However, challenges arose. A king named Sankaragana from the Kalachuri kingdom attacked Kosala, where her father lived. While her father, Janmejaya I, was busy fighting this invader, some officials from the Bhauma-Kara dynasty decided to make a change.

They supported a plan to remove the queen from power. This plan was led by her sister-in-law, who was the widow of Sivakaradeva III. Tribhuvana Mahadevi II was removed from the throne and replaced by her sister-in-law, who became Tribhuvana Mahadevi III.

After she was no longer queen, Tribhuvana Mahadevi II went to live with her father in Kosala.
