The Life of Triboulet
Early Life and Becoming a Jester
Nicolas Ferrial was born in France in 1479. It is thought that he had a condition that affected his brain and body. Despite this, he became a very important person in the royal court. He found his purpose as a jester for King Louis XII and later for King Francis I. Both kings enjoyed his jokes and how he looked.
As "Triboulet," he was known for being very clever and quick-witted. His jokes were often so sharp that he sometimes got into trouble with the king and other important people.
Triboulet's Cleverness and a Royal Prank
Triboulet was famous for his bold humor. Once, he playfully slapped King Francis I on his back. The nobles around them found it very funny, but the king became angry. He threatened to have Triboulet executed for his actions.
The king then calmed down and offered Triboulet a deal. He said he would forgive him if Triboulet could come up with an apology that was even more insulting than the slap. Triboulet quickly replied, "I am so sorry, Your Majesty, I didn't recognize you! I thought you were the Queen!"
A Jester's Punishment and a Witty Escape
The king was furious because Triboulet had joked about the queen, which was against his rules. He ordered that Triboulet be put to death. However, because Triboulet had served him well for many years, the king allowed him to choose how he would die.
Triboulet, always quick with words, said, "Good sire, by Saint Goody Two Shoes and Saint Fatty, who protect people who are silly, I ask to die from old age." The king laughed at this clever response. Instead of executing him, the king ordered Triboulet to be sent away from the kingdom. Luckily, Triboulet did live to a ripe old age, passing away in 1536.
