Tricoryne elatior, also known as the yellow autumn-lily or yellow rush-lily, is a beautiful flowering plant. It belongs to the Asphodelaceae family. This plant is native to Australia and can be found in every state and territory there.
Discovering the Yellow Autumn-Lily
The yellow autumn-lily is a type of plant that lives for many years. It has special underground stems called rhizomes, which help it spread. It also has strong, thread-like roots.
How It Looks
This plant usually grows to be about 10 to 40 centimeters (4 to 16 inches) tall. Sometimes, it can even reach up to 1 meter (about 3 feet) in height!
Its leaves are long and thin, like blades of grass. They are typically 5 to 10 cm long and 1 to 3.5 mm wide. The leaves are usually smooth, but sometimes they can feel a bit rough at the base.
Flowers and Seeds
The plant's main stem, where the flowers grow, is round and smooth. Sometimes, it might have tiny, rough hairs near the bottom.
The flowers grow in small clusters called umbels. Each cluster holds 2 to 10 bright yellow flowers. These flowers are on short stalks, about 1.5 to 6 mm long.
The flower petals, called tepals, are in two groups. The outer tepals are oblong and pointed, with three veins. They are about 6 to 14 mm long. The inner tepals are more oval-shaped and rounded, also with three veins. They are a bit smaller, about 5 to 10 mm long. After the plant flowers, these tepals twist up like a spiral before they fall off.
Inside the flower, there are six stamens, which are the parts that make pollen. They are attached at the base of the petals. Each stamen has a filament (a stalk) about 3 to 6 mm long. Below the anthers (the pollen-making parts), there are small tufts of club-shaped hairs.
After the flowers are pollinated, they form small, oval-shaped fruits called mericarps. These are about 3 to 6 mm long and have a slightly net-like pattern on them.
Where Does It Grow?
The yellow autumn-lily likes to grow in different types of natural areas across Australia.
It can be found in sclerophyll forests, which are forests with tough, leathery-leaved trees like eucalyptus. It also grows in heaths, which are open areas with low-growing shrubs, and in woodlands. Sometimes, you might even spot it in swampy areas.
This plant prefers to grow in sandy loams, which are soils that have a good mix of sand, silt, and clay. It also thrives in lateritic soils, which are reddish soils rich in iron and aluminum.
