Trigo is a small, unincorporated community in Madera County, California. Being "unincorporated" means it's not an official city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's managed by the county. The name "Trigo" comes from the Spanish word for "Wheat." This community is located about 7 miles (11 km) east-southeast of the city of Madera. It sits at an elevation of 289 feet (88 meters) above sea level.
A Look Back at Trigo's History
Trigo wasn't always called Trigo! Long ago, it was known as Patterson. The area was divided into smaller plots of land around 1911. Farmers from Iowa and Colorado moved there, hoping to build a new life.
What Trigo Used to Be Like
For many years, Trigo was a busy little place. It had its own post office, which helped people send and receive mail from 1912 to 1942. There was also a store where people could buy supplies, a church for worship, and a school for children to learn. The Santa Fe also had a freight station there, which meant goods could be shipped in and out by train. There were even large warehouses for storing things.
Trigo Today
Over time, Trigo changed. By 1979, it was much smaller, with about 15 houses and 12 mobile homes. Today, only a few homes remain in this quiet community.
