Trincheras is a small town located in the northwest part of Sonora, a state in Mexico. It is part of the Trincheras Municipality. The town was started in 1775 by a person named Bernardo de Urrea. In 2000, about 1,788 people lived there. The area of the municipality is about 3,764 square kilometers.
What People Do for Work
The main jobs in Trincheras are related to farming and raising animals. In 2000, people in the area raised about 21,000 cattle. Many families also do "subsistence farming." This means they grow just enough food to feed themselves and their families.
Ancient Architecture
The town of Trincheras is named after a special place nearby called El Cerro de Trincheras. This is an important archaeological site. An archaeological site is a place where scientists study old buildings and objects to learn about people who lived long ago.
El Cerro de Trincheras also gives its name to a unique type of ancient site. These sites are found in the desert areas of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. Early explorers saw hillside terraces and walls there. These structures reminded them of trincheras, which is a Spanish word for trenches or forts.
