Trinidad to Clam Beach Run facts for kids
The Trinidad to Clam Beach Run is a popular race held every winter in Humboldt County, California. It started in the 1960s as a training run for track and field athletes from Humboldt State University. The original race was about 8.75 miles long.
Over the years, this event became very well-known. More races were added, including a 3-mile and a 5.75-mile option. A half marathon (about 13.1 miles) was also added in 2002. This longer race was stopped for a while but started again in 2017.
The Race Course
The run begins about 3 miles north of Trinidad, California. Runners start on Patrick's Point Drive. The course then goes through the town of Trinidad.
Next, it follows Scenic Drive to Moonstone Beach. The final part of the race is on Clam Beach. A very exciting part of the course is crossing the Little River. This happens where the river meets the ocean at Moonstone Beach.
The date and start time of the run depend on the ocean's tides. It is usually held on the last Saturday of January or the first Saturday of February. The organizers pick the date when the tide is low enough for runners to cross the river safely.
Why is it Held?
The Greater Trinidad Chamber of Commerce organizes the Trinidad to Clam Beach Run. This group helps local businesses and the community. The money raised from the run helps fund scholarships. These scholarships support students in the area.
