The former Trinity Church stands in downtown New Britain. It is at the southeast corner of Main and Chestnut Streets. This large building is made of granite and slate. It was designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. The church is known for its colorful use of granite and slate. These materials create unique patterns and designs. The front of the building, facing Main Street, has a round section on the left. On the right, there is a square tower. This tower has smaller towers at its corners and a pointed roof.

A Look at Its History

The first Methodist group in New Britain started in 1816. However, they did not get a permanent church building until 1828. This was partly because some people in the area were not friendly towards them. Their first church building was replaced in 1855. This happened because more and more people joined the church. By the 1880s, even this second building was too small.

The church building you see today was finished in 1891. It was a major project for the famous architect Amos P. Cutting. He designed it late in his career. The number of church members reached its highest point in the early 1950s. After that, membership started to drop. This was partly due to city projects that tore down homes nearby. The church could no longer afford to keep up the large building. So, in 2000, the group decided to tear it down.

However, people who wanted to save old buildings stepped in. They rescued the church from being demolished. Since then, the building has been changed. It is now a place where people can enjoy performing arts.
