The Trocha from Júcaro to Morón (also known as Trocha de Júcaro a Morón in Spanish) was a strong military defense line in Cuba. It was built between 1869 and 1872. Its main purpose was to stop rebel fighters from moving to the western part of the island. This happened during Cuba's First War of Independence (1868–1878). The Trocha was about 68 kilometers (42 miles) long, stretching between the towns of Júcaro and Morón.

Building a Strong Defense Line

This military line was the biggest Spanish fort system in their colonies during the 1800s. It was a modern way to build defenses, much more advanced than older Spanish ditch defenses.

Who Built the Trocha?

The Trocha was built using the hard work of enslaved people and Chinese immigrants. They dug a wide ditch and built forts along it. The ditch had wire fences, and the area around it was cleared for a firing zone.

How the Trocha Worked

A railway line ran right next to the Trocha. This was Cuba's first government railway! It was very important because it helped bring supplies and more soldiers to the forts quickly. This made the defense line very strong and hard to get past.

The Trocha Today

Many of the forts from the Trocha are still standing today. This makes the Trocha one of the most important military sites in the Caribbean. Parts of it are even protected by the Cuban National Heritage agency. It's a great example of history that you can still see!
