Becoming President
In 2016, Troy Weston ran for president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. He won the election by a large amount. He was elected over the person who was president before him, John Yellow Bird Steele. Troy Weston received almost two-thirds of all the votes.
He served as president for two years. When the next election came in 2018, he decided not to run again. He did not say why he chose not to seek re-election.
Helping the Community
When Troy Weston became president, he shared his main goals. He wanted to make the tribe's economy better. This means he wanted to help people find jobs and improve how money was earned. He also wanted to speak for his people in Washington, D.C. This meant making sure the government heard their needs.
In 2018, some strong storms and tornadoes hit the tribe's land. Troy Weston asked for help from a group called FEMA. FEMA helps people after big disasters. He asked them to declare it a disaster area. This would bring money and supplies to help fix the damage. However, FEMA said the damage was not bad enough for their special help.
