Early Life and Education
Troy Heinert was born in Spearfish, South Dakota. He grew up on a ranch. When he was 12, his father passed away. A close family friend helped guide him. Troy went to local schools. He earned a degree in education. He is also a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.
His Career in Public Service
Troy Heinert started his career as an elementary school teacher. He also coached wrestling. Later, he decided to run for public office.
Serving on the School Board
His first elected role was on the Todd County High School Board. He won a seat and served for three years. This experience helped him learn about public service.
Becoming a Business Owner
In 2007, Troy and his wife, Gena, became business owners. They bought Chute 2, a bar and restaurant. It was connected to the Prairie View country club in Mission.
Entering State Politics
In 2012, Troy Heinert was elected to the South Dakota House of Representatives. He represented District 26A. This district included Todd and Mellette counties. He served one term in the House.
In 2014, Troy Heinert was elected to the South Dakota Senate. He continued to serve the people of South Dakota. In 2015, he became the Senate assistant minority leader. This means he helped lead the political party that was not in control. In 2018, he was elected as the Senate minority leader.
