Exploring History with Art: "Fat Cat Came To Play"
On December 3, 2017, Troy Michie opened his first solo art show. It was called "Fat Cat Came To Play" and was shown at Company Gallery. The exhibition ran until January 21, 2018. In this show, Michie looked at the meaning of "zoot suits." These were special suits with broad shoulders. They were popular in the 1940s among Italian, Black, and Latino men in the United States.
The art show was inspired by the Zoot Suit Riots of 1943. These events involved conflicts where some people wearing zoot suits were attacked. Michie's art aimed to remind people of these historical moments. He wanted to show how these past events are still important today.
Michie's art in "Fat Cat Came To Play" explored different identities. He used collages to express social and economic ideas through the zoot suit. He often cut out faces from old photographs. This was to show that the stories of minority groups are still relevant. One important artwork was "Disruptive Patterns." It reminded viewers that police officers were involved in the Zoot Suit Riots. Michie's art always aims to represent the cultural expressions of people. He especially focuses on male figures from history who were often overlooked.
