Tsomoriri is a beautiful lake located high up in the mountains of Ladakh, a region in Jammu and Kashmir, India. It sits on a wide, flat area called a plateau, surrounded by tall peaks. Tsomoriri is one of the largest high-altitude lakes in India, and it's a very special place for nature and wildlife.

About Tsomoriri Lake

Tsomoriri Lake is found at an amazing height of about 4,522 meters (14,836 feet) above sea level. This makes it one of the highest lakes of its size in the world! The lake is about 28 kilometers (17 miles) long and up to 8 kilometers (5 miles) wide. Even though it's so high up, the lake's water is a mix of fresh and slightly salty water, which is called brackish. This unique mix supports different kinds of plants and animals.

Where is Tsomoriri Lake?

Tsomoriri is located in the Changthang region of Ladakh. This area is known for its cold desert climate, meaning it gets very little rain or snow, except for the winter snowfall. The lake is surrounded by dry, rocky mountains that often have snow on their tops. The nearest village to the lake is Korzok, which is one of the highest permanent settlements in the world. People who live here are often nomadic, meaning they move from place to place with their animals.

Animals and Plants at Tsomoriri

Despite the harsh conditions, Tsomoriri is home to many interesting animals. You can often spot the Kyang, also known as the Tibetan wild ass, grazing near the lake. Other animals include marmots, which are like large ground squirrels, and different types of birds. The lake is a very important stop for many migratory birds, especially during the summer months. Birds like the bar-headed goose, the great crested grebe, and various types of ducks come here to nest and raise their young.

The plants around Tsomoriri are mostly small grasses and shrubs that can survive in the cold, dry environment. These plants are important food for the animals that live there.

Why is Tsomoriri Important?

Tsomoriri Lake is recognized internationally as a very important wetland. It is part of the Ramsar Convention, which is an agreement to protect wetlands around the world. This means the lake and its surroundings are a protected area, helping to keep its unique ecosystem safe. Protecting Tsomoriri helps to save the rare animals and plants that depend on it, especially the many bird species that visit. It's a great example of how nature can thrive even in extreme conditions.
